Planting snow peas in containers

I am considering growing a small quantity of snow peas in an outdoor container. The container is 30″ x 30″ and approximately 14″ deep. I have a wire cage that protects the plants from animal intrusion and also allows for draping of sun inhibiting material to prevent all day direct sunlight if necessary.
If this project is worth trying what is the depth of earth required to grow the crop? How high do the plants grow? Would they require a trellis? Can you start growing seeds indoor and then transplant them to the container or is it better to plant the seeds directly into the outdoor container?
Would appreciate your comments and expertise. Many thanks,
Ed
