Q.Planting Seeds For The First Time

Zone zip 94538, Fremont, CA. I believe my area is a 9B | mmhammack added on October 8, 2024 | Answered

I am beginning an organic garden of vegetables for the first time. Must I start the seeds in a little egg carton thing with a heating pan under it? Can’t I just plant the seeds in my outdoor container and wait? Also when starting an organic garden, does that mean I can’t use fertilizer? I’m using organic soil I purchased in bags I’m the beginner’s beginner.

Starting your organic vegetable garden can be straightforward! While many people start seeds in egg cartons with heating mats, especially for warmth-loving plants like tomatoes and peppers, it’s not always necessary. You can plant seeds directly in your outdoor containers, especially if you're growing crops that tolerate cooler temperatures like radishes, beans, or carrots. Just keep an eye on the weather and soil temperature to ensure good germination. As for fertilizer, organic gardening doesn't mean avoiding fertilizers entirely—it just means using natural, organic options like compost, manure, or organic liquid fertilizers. These will help maintain soil health and provide nutrients without synthetic chemicals. The organic soil you purchased is a great start, but adding organic matter or slow-release organic fertilizers throughout the season can support your plants as they grow.
