Planting Round A New Tree

I know you should remove grass around a newly planted tree, I understand this is because grass inhibits the new tree’s root growth. Can you put other plants, for example bulbs in the bare earth or should you leave it bare for the first couple of years.

Leaving the grass, actually, makes a good living mulch to keep moisture in. Tree roots will go much further down than herbaceous plants will, so there isn't much risk of competition.

However, if you choose to leave the earth bare, that is fine, as well.

Planting flowers is less likely to inhibit the tree than the tree is to inhibit the flowers, but it is still ok to plant around them. Give them a little distance from the trunk of the tree.
