Planting magnolia tree

Question

I live in Michigan. I was given a bud from a magnolia tree in Georgia that had fallen to the ground. It contains several seeds. I was told that I could plant it in a big pot and care for it inside, taking it outside in the summers. Can you give me advice on how to plant and care for it?
