Planting Hardy Succulents In Ground

I live in Georgia zone 8b. I would like to plant sempervivums and sedums in ground, but not sure how to prepare the area and with exactly what substate. I figured a succulent/cactus mix amended with pumice and chicken grit would be fine. Is there something better I can use that won’t be as expensive and won’t kill the succulents in the red clay ground where I want to plant? I’ve read to use regular potting soil and mini slate chips. Please help with what would be best in my area!

The most important thing is that the area be well draining. You can add amendments to the clay soil to achieve that. Also, adding hills or slopes will further improve the drainage.
