Planting Garlic

I bought a bag of garlic to plant this year. The picture directions showed how to place the head of garlic in the soil. It showed the whole head so I planted each head as the picture showed. Now I am reading that I was supposed to break the heads apart! I planted these about 6 weeks ago (am in KS) and they are all sprouting up and are at least 8 inches tall. Please tell me that these were not a waste of money and time! Do some types of garlic need to be planted as a head?
