planting for a decomposed granite hillside

There is a decomposed granite hillside in the middle of our block that tends to fill up with Scotch Broom. I’ve been cutting this down (as a firebreak), but that leaves the hillside without any vegetation at all.

We have an El Niño predicted for this winter, so I’m wondering about trying to plant something that is drought-tolerant, pretty, and not a fire hazard. Possibilities I’ve considered include succulents, poppies, and common thrift. Do you have any advice or better suggestions?

I would suggest contacting the local county extension office for your area.
They will have help with possible plantings and programs that would be specific to the area and drought and fire dangers in your zone.
