Gardening Know How Questions & Answers - https://questions.gardeningknowhow.comHi, I am looking for some hedge-planting advice. I am renovating a crescentic flower bed in my outdoor patio (see attached photos), and part of the renovation is replacing the Indian hawthorne hedge that previously bordered the 40″-tall, 20′-long brick wall at the back of the flower bed. The Indian hawthorn was hardy until the bad Texas Freeze in Feb 2021, at which point it completely died. Also, it had become overgrown, reaching 40″ in height and 36″ in depth. As I removed the dead hedge, I noticed that the hedge comprised 18 individual plants. I would like the replacement hedge eventually to be 30-36″ tall and 24″ deep. The hedge will be trimmed to look moderately manicured, but not as manicured as a box hedge. My candidate hedge plant is a: “2.25 Gal. Abelia Rose Creek Flowering Shrub with White Blooms” (see attached). I purchased a couple of test plants from Home Depot and like the way they look, but I have no experience with this shrub. Could you advise me on the hedge? My questions are: Do you have experience with Abelia Rose Creek and know whether it will be a good choice? I’m in Dallas, so sunny and hot in the summer, occasional freezes in the winter, USDA Zone 8a. How should I arrange the individual plants? Single-row? Zig-zag? How far apart, and how far from the brick wall? Any special soil preparation? Thanks in advance for your advice.
