Planting a small tree in a planter

We have a planter which is 40cm deep. It is about 1m sq. or slightly bigger. Would this be suitable for a small tree that would grow to full height?

This could work for small dwarf trees, such as a dwarf citrus tree.

If you are looking to plant an ornamental type tree, you will likely need a larger container.
