Planting a Fig tree

I want to plant a fig tree in my yard. I live in Northern VA, and have a sunny place I think will probably work for it (not too close to the house or the sidewalk or the redbud). However, when I looked up fig trees, there were SO MANY CHOICES!! I need some help choosing. I lean towards trees that yield greener rather than dark purple figs (when ripe), though the priority is on a tree that will do well in this area and produce a lot of flavorful fruit. I want to avoid the kinds that tend to sour on the trees in wet weather, because we often get a lot of wet weather and humidity in spring and summer.

What do you think of the Peter’s Honey fig tree for this area? It might be a little large (grows to 15-25 feet) but maybe if it’s kept cut back that won’t matter. What about the Conandria and the Celestial? What are your recommendations? I’m thinking I could order it and plant it now. I compost, but I might have used pretty much all this summer’s yield on my tomato plants (And WOW what a tomato year it’s been!). So I might have to buy compost or some kind of dirt to plant it in — your recommendations about this will be helpful too. Thanks much!

Yes, there are a number of fig varieties that will do well in your region. The Celestial is one that thrives well in your area and is less prone to souring. Brown Turkey varieties also do well under your climate conditions. Peter’s Honey fig is suitable for locations with early frost but needs a warm location for proper ripening and may require additional winter protection, though it does seem to fit the bill as far as what you are looking for.
