Planted A Ceanothus 2 Weeks Ago, Now Leaves Turning Brown

I live in a Zone 8b. I planted a Ceanothus ‘Victoria’ 2 weeks ago. The soil in my yard contains a lot of heavy clay so I amended the soil with with compost to improve the drainage. I planted the Ceanothus and top dressed the soil with another 2-3” of compost. It’s planted near a fence and faces southwest. Now some of the leaves/stems are turning brown, dry and crispy. It’s been unusually dry this month and I haven’t been watering it much. We have had a few mornings with frost lately too. Could this be due to transplant shock? Not enough water? Frost damage? Or am I missing something else? Thank you!

It sounds like a number of issues from all of the above mentioned things!

These don't, necessarily, like their soils to be very fertile. They have nitrogen fixing bacteria associated with their roots, so feeding them too often isn't required. It may be having a hard time adjusting to the compost.

They need a little help during dry times, so watering during these times will help prevent some dying off, as well.

It is likely having a little trouble with the colder weather, since it has been freshly transplanted, as well.
