Plant care of a Robinia Frisia Contorta

We have moved into a house and have a Robinia Frisia Contorta about 5 foot from the front of our house and I cut it back last year and now it’s gone mad growing really bushy and fast. I am now worried about the root system being so close to the house as I have been given two lots of contradicting advice and don’t know what to do, they were as follows 1) keep it cut back to stop the roots growing as they grow to the same size as the tree and the other advice 2) don’t cut it as it makes the roots grow more and I can’t seem to find much information at all on this particular tree. At the moment it is about 10 foot tall and I’m desperate for some reliable advice as I’m thinking of getting rid of it if it’s a problem but don’t really want to as it’s very healthy.
Thanks a lot
Alison

Pruning will not greatly affect the root growth either way. What encourages root growth is water availability. YCour tree will tend to grow roots more into the lawn area and hedge near the window because that is where the water and fertilization will be, not towards the driveway.

But five feet is not so close to the house that you should expect foundation damage, it usually takes a larger growing tree and a closer placement to do that.

Consider installing a “root barrier” along the planter between the grass and the hedge.
