Plant Care

My pitcher plant had no name other than “Pitcher Plant” when I bought it. How can I determine what variety it is? I will keep it in my greenhouse for the winter, but would like to put it outside for the summer.

Without pictures I would be unable to identify the plant. If you did not specifically order a cultivar, then most likely it is Nepenthes alata. The most commonly sold variety. It is the easiest, and least picky pitcher to own, but it still requires quite a bit of care. Make sure the temperatures don’t get below fifty degrees. This will damage the plant. They do well in a very humid bathroom with a low wattage led lamp on them. Spray them daily with water. I have many species of pitcher plants. Most of very difficult to care for. They are not sold unless you are specifically looking for them. With alata, though, the care can be done by even those with little knowledge of the plant.
