Perlite is manufactured from volcanic rock. It helps soil drain quickly and makes it easy for fragile new roots to penetrate deeper into soil. You find it in almost all soilless potting mixes. If a plant is prone to root rot, like lavender, or is a semi-desert plant like Christmas cactus, adding extra perlite helps. It doesn't have nutritional benefits.
