Perennial Hardy Hibiscus

I would like to know if I should cut down the stems of my hardy Hibiscus after blooms are spent and fallen. The leaves are mostly browning, but I am not sure if the stems are required for the plant to nourish itself for regrowth in the spring. These hibiscus totally die off in the winter (Erie, PA).
