I have an overgrown hydrangea that I’d like to “tame”. I’ve started working on it, but don’t know if I’m approaching it right. Any suggestions?

Yea, now would be a good time to start pruning since this one blooms on new wood. You can prune for a shorter shrub, or keep it like you have it with just some tip pruning. That's up to you. These will offer some more information on care:
