Q.Peculiar Growth Of My Clematis

Zone IP16 4GY | carolecassidy129@btinternet.com added on June 2, 2020 | Answered

My Clematis is growing away strongly as you would expect at this time, but at its base it has thrown up a small clump from which has grown 6 flowers on short stalks is this an unusual occurrence and should I just leave it alone.? Kind regards

You have a Clematis that is grafted! Essentially, it has a different rootstock then the top.

I would cut them off, as they will likely overtake the top scion over time. If you would rather the root stock take over, then leave them, but you will lose the top at some point.
