peach trees

My peach tree has developed a crack near the base of the tree that has turned black. What has caused this and what can I do, if anything?

It sounds like your tree may have been affected by frost crack. Young trees are especially susceptible to it.

There is little you can do now for the tree to fix the crack, but I would recommend treating the crack with a fungicide and pesticide once a month or so until it heals over. This will help prevent disease or pests from attacking the tree through the wound. Other than that, leave it alone to heal. It will not kill the tree but will likely leave a scar on the trunk.
