Patchouli perfume

Where does the perfume come from? Do the leaves or the flowers of Patchouli plants hold the perfume?

The leaves are harvested for the fragrance and specifically the top 3 to 4 sets of leaves hold the most fragrance.
The leaves are distilled to extract the oil.
