Papaya Tree Question

i have clay dirt i was thinking to dig and put a rich soil how big of a space for the roots do i need to leave

If you want to amend the full root space, I would dig, about, 3 feet deep and 5 foot wide. This will give the tree plenty of root to spread for its fast, and short, life cycle.
