Overgrown Bird of Paradise

Our plant has reached over 20 feet high with approximately 12 stalks/trunks. We have cut it back a lot. When cutting the stalks, should they be cut to the ground, dug out or what?

You need to dig them out, when a plant gets that big you have to separate them
