Our gardenia (grafted on rootstock) has white oval spots every morning. Then some black sooty mold, is there too. What shall we do?

How big are these white oval spots? If they are small, it sounds like it could be scale or perhaps aphids, though scale is more likely. This would also contribute to the sooty mold. This article will help:
