Birds of paradise have short stalks

Otherwise healthy white birds of paradise but new stalks are very short. What is the cause? One plant growing in pot on Lanai and another outside cage planted in the ground. New stalks are much shorter than previous growth on both plants. Is this a fertilizer or other issue? Heavy rains over last 6 weeks have not impacted lanai plant.

Shorter blooms are likely due to more sunlight. Taller flower spikes will grow on plants in a shadier location.
