Flowering Cherry

Q.Ornamental Cherry looking sick.

Zone Christchurch, New Zealand | FeijoaHoldings added on October 11, 2017 | Answered

Hello,
We have 2 ornamental cherries in our front garden. One is in full bloom and leaves are now filling out. But the other seems to be stuck at the budding stage and any little leaves that have appeared are looking yellowy.
We have just put alot of mulch around the trees, would that have effected it?
Thanks
Lisa

Hello,

Thank you for sending us your gardening question. When mulch is piled up thick around a tree, it suffocates the roots and allows no oxygen to get to them. This can also cause the roots and lower trunk of the tree to decay. As a general rule, do not put more than two inches of mulch around your tree, and keep all mulch at least a four inch circumference of no mulch at all around the very base of the trunk.
