Orchids In Water

Question

I grew many orchids in water and been told to keep the water clean to use wood charcoal and you do not need to change the water. Seem not true for me as I use the charcoal for bbq but not the brikets. I ear about charcoal powder for plants but seem not working, what should I use? Thank you very much
