Odd Growth on Crepe Myrtle

My crepe myrtle has a grayish-green colored growth on it. I can peel it off, like an outer covering. I was reading the article about sooty mold, but then it said the color is black. Since mine is not, I don’t know what it is. There is also some Spanish moss, but I haven’t seen any bugs. It’s pretty scrawny and I thought maybe the ‘mold’ was why it wasn’t as pretty as some. I live in Florida, don’t water or fertilize very often. I have just realized that I am a horrible careaker. What can I do?

It is lichen, which is harmless to the tree. Here is more information:
