Question

I have access to a raise bed about 5×12. What would be good to start with and is it worth buying plants already started or plant from seed. Also would it be a good idea to put down fresh loam each year before planting?

I’m afraid I don’t have all necessary information. Are you looking to grow vegetables or flowers, grasses and shrubs? How much direct sunlight does the raised bed receive? For success, it is very important to grow plants that match available sunlight. There are pros and cons to starting seeds indoors. Seedlings need to be several inches from a strong light source. While an inexpensive shop light is satisfactory, some prefer more costly “grow lights”. There are other supplies that require an initial investment but which save money in the long run. Seeds and seedlings need a few minutes of attention 1-2 times daily which isn’t realistic for everyone. Finally, there are vegetables and flowers that don’t benefit from being started indoors, often because they either grow very fast or they don’t like being transplanted. These are easily started outdoors from seed. Seed packets provide this information as well as planting directions. As a general statement, annual plants like marigold are easier to grow from seed than perennial flowers. Autumn is when bulbs are planted, tulips, daffodils and other spring flowering bulbs.
