Gardening Know How Questions & Answers - https://questions.gardeningknowhow.comMy young Border Collie/Australian Shepherd is a digger. She has dug up several of my lilies and I’m NOT a happy camper. They are the only plant she bothers. How in the world do I keep her out? BTW, fences don’t work! Dang dog!

Great dog breed mix, you are fortunate to have such a smart and fun best friend. They are bred to run all day so a distraction and outlet for all that energy is the first thing that comes to mind. Repellents is another.

For my Aussie (dog love of my life), the urge to herd was far greater than the desire to dig. He would herd anything that moved, ducks, horses, mules, kids. And he would enjoy an off leash hike where there was plenty of opportunity to discover smells and critters to flush and chase. Do you have any nearby farm or playground or natural wildlife area where he can run and get exhausted? (If exhausted is even possible.)

Thank you so much for your input! We had an Aussie years ago (I still miss him terribly) but he never was a digger dog. Ember is an incredible dog and having had a border AND an Aussie, I should have remembered your advice! They will destroy things if bored. We have ten acres and with the fall weather we are outside a lot… LOL, you’re right, do they EVER get exhausted??? I love her dearly and wouldn’t trade her for anything.. but will have to check into something to guide her in another direction. Thank you again!
