Native White Flowering Dogwood

Our Dogwood tree has white spots on the bark of the tree. We are not sure what to do. It is in a mostly sunny spot. It has some large plants around its base. The soil is good and it is well drained. The tree is approximately 5-6 feet from the northwest corner of the house. It has started blooming now, the flowers and leaves look good, but it seems a bit later than other dogwoods around the area. I pruned this spring to help it to leaf out more and conserve engergy. Last year it just looked like it was struggling. The leaves never got as big as they should. It did bloom last year, then looked worse after it was done blooming. Also, some branches just died (not many). We were wondering if it needed to be sprayed. It gets watered along with the rest of the plants in the yard–every other day with hose or sprinkler.

Those white spots sound like a fungal growth. Spray the bark with fungicide.
