Gardening Know How Questions & Answers - https://questions.gardeningknowhow.comHi! I have a very long – 22 ft. but narrow – 6 inches – planter at the foundation of my house. One year, I pretty much stuffed it with my favorites; marigold, petunias, salvia, dusty miller and sweet potato vine….but I found that the wave petunias swallowed up the dusty miller and the marigold, and the salvias didn\’t do great because they might have been fighting for water and nutrients? Anyway – in that kind of planter – how close can I plant annuals? Should I just make a single line of annuals all the way down, or can annuals be planted that close together making 2 rows? Ideally what I am looking for is that thriller and spiller effect. Something tall in the back like salvia and something in front. But can they be planted that close?? Thanks in advance!! Attached is a photo of my first year planting that I mentioned above. From when I planted to about a month after. But as I mentioned, all that was left at the end of the season was the wave petunias and vines.

Petunia and Ornamental Sweet Potato are really good options for spaces like this. There are many more options, as well, if you are willing to go with annuals, too, though. Here are some articles that will offer suggestions:
