My poppies start to grow every year in spring, then die and turn yellow after growing 6-8 inches

Have a small planting of oriental poppies which have been in the garden for 4 or 5 years. They start to grow in the spring and get to 6 to 8 inches tall and then turn yellow and die
Last Year they lasted long enough to have 1 bloom. A couple of years ago, I thought they had totally died, but they have started to grow every year and the planting has grown bigger. Have tried several different times to grow poppies with no success. I remember my grandmother’s garden with huge plantings of orange poppies

Poppies grow in soil with very low fertility, and will not tolerate heavy feeding. They are also drought tolerant, and not very tolerant of soggy soil. If this is the case, then they will die from being waterlogged, or infection.
