This is not easy to answer without more information on soil and water management.
It could be seasonal decline and natural dieback after the primary growing season.
The portion of the plant farthest from the rooted base may not be getting enough water translocated to the extreme ends.
Another possibility is exposure to direct sun is more intense for the ailing portion.
Consider fertilization and more water.
