My New Tulip Bulbs Didn’t Come Up This Spring

I’ve never had problems with tulips in years of gardening. Last year we moved into the country, and I planted 200 new tulip bulbs. This spring only a handful of them came up at all. Will they come up next spring? If not, what happened to them?

If they did not come up this year, they will not come up next year. I would suspect that critters got your bulbs. Tulip bulbs are a favorite of a wide variety of animals, such as squirrels, chipmunks, voles and just about any small rodent that may be in your area. In the future, try planting your tulip bulbs in cages made of chicken wire. This allows them to grow but keeps pesky critters from digging them up and eating them.
