Q.My Mexican Pinweel Only Grows Green Leaves And Not The Rosy Coloured Edges. Why?
The mexican pinwheel ( rosetta pinwheel) had a beautiful red ridge around it’s leaves when I bought it. I brought it home and even though it is thriving, the leaves are only green. The leaves do not grow with the beautiful rosy ridge lining the edge of the leaf. I live in Northern Central California ( zone 9 ) so maybe it’s the atmosphere or climate. Maybe it’s the type of soil I’ve used which is container potting soil with a little clay. Is this the wrong soil? The plant is thriving – growing multiple rosetta clusters – only green without the red color. Just last week I was in Monterey, Calif. and bought a large pinwheel with beautiful red edging. I brought it home and the leaves that are growing are coming in all green. Is it possible to grow the pinwheels in my area with the red edging? Help! (I am open to ANY suggestions you may have)

The pinwheel plants need very well-drained soil, such as with a succulent mix or a regular potting mix. The red edges may appear with the proper light. Indoors they need bright, indirect light, and outdoors, they need part-shade or a dappled shade situation. They do not like hot, dry weather and may go dormant in summer. Their best growth is from winter to spring when it is cooler.
The new leaves growing green may still develop the red edges. I wouldn't worry just yet. Here is more on its care:
