ailing jade plant

My Jade plant has developed white frosting-like stuff encircling the base of leaves. What is it and how do I deal with it? Plant is a large Jade plant in a northeast window of an apartment. The “stuff” is the consistency of butter cream frosting or a melting marshmallow. It has developed in about last ten days.
