Q.Tall Hibiscus Plants

Zone michigan | shadyoaks added on August 6, 2011 | Answered

My hibiscus plants all grow tall but they are not filling out. How do I make them spread out rather than up?

I thank you so much for your information. Presently I cut them down quite a bit after they have blossomed but leave some of the stem up so I know where they are. Should I prune them when they first start blossoming like I do with my mums so they will provide more blossoms? Each plant does have many blossoms. I hate to sound so dumb, but I have never had these before and I have become such a lover of them I want to do everything right. Would appreciate any other help you can give.

These plants are slow to increase in clump size i have found. Pruning back the stems by 1/3 to 1/2 may encourage more root stimulation. They are quit heavy feeders so apply compost and composted manure each spring.
