my healthy and productive fig tree has dry fruit

The tree is huge and looks healthy (about 8 yrs old), thousands of figs. They look good and even smell, but they are dry and unedible. Some laundry grey water contamination.

Dried fruit on the tree is normally cause by disease, which is introduced by the Dried Fruit Beetle. They crawl up into the fruit and bring disease. This article will help: http://extension.entm.purdue.edu/publications/E-229.pdf [1]
