My Gardenia’s Leaves Are Turning Yellow

Why are the leaves on my gardenia turning yellow? Some are green with spots of yellow. It is a rescued gardenia bush that I planted in a big plastic planter. It shows a lot of new leaves, but they soon turn yellow as well.
