My gardenia leaves are turning yellow

What would cause this? Could the wood chips around the bush also be causing yellow leaves and not growing as much?

The wood chips could cause plant leaves to turn light yellow if the chips are mixed WITH the soil in a flower bed because the bacteria and fungi in the soil deplete the nitrogen that the plant needs to break down the wood chips. Wood chips ON TOP of the soil, however, are not a problem. You can read more about wood chip myths and facts at the following link:
