My Gardenia and Azalea bushes share a space. I have fertilizerd the area. What mulch can I use?

I do not Want the bushes to have a problem with the wrong kind of mulch.

Mulch soil surface with a 2-inch layer of fine or medium bark and don't cultivate. A layer of peat moss makes good container mulch.
