My Camellia Has Outgrown Its Space

My Camellia has outgrown its space, as it is 30 years old and over grown the path which my husband (who is disabled) has to pass. Should it be pruned? It would mean having to prune into bare wood. We would not want to kill it, as it has great sentimental value. Would it survive?

You can cut it back by a third but no more (in one given year), as this would damage the plant. If necessary, you can prune another third from the plant next year, until it’s at a more manageable size.
