25-Year-Old Wisteria Suddenly Died

My 25-year-old wisteria suddenly developed shrivelled leaves and died. The leaves suddenly shrivelled and 2 weeks later it looks as if it’s dead. It flowered earlier, not quite as much as last year, but pretty well. The only thing that has changed is that we had a gas pipe laid to the house a little way from it. The wisteria is up against the house wall and has been prolific over recent years.

It could have been a few things, most having to do with the roots.

It could have been a root gall. Or it could have been nematodes attacking the roots. The laid pipe may have damaged the roots, which then opened them up to damage from pests or fungus.

The only non-root reason I could think of is that it was accidentally sprayed with weed killer. This can happen if someone where to spray weedkiller on a windy day and it blows over onto the plant.
