Generally, it is best to plant two or more at a time. The male and female flowers can, often, grow at different times, making it difficult to pollinate.
Sometimes, this can be due to environmental conditions.
The best thing to do will be to keep some of the male flowers, dry them, and use the pollen once females do appear.
