Mountain Laurel

Question

I recently bought some land in Brevard, nc that has a lot of mountain laurel. My guess is that they have never been pruned or fertilized. Some of the plants are 6-8feet tall. I plan on building on the property in a couple of years. How can I prune them now (how so that they recover in 1-2 years.
