Monstera Deliciosa Fruit Production

How to bring full-sized green fruit pods to ripen? I had six but the fruit drops off the stalk before opening and ripening. Now there are five large, strong, green pods left. One opens its sheath on one day but closes at night never to reopen. The plant is growing well in soil at the edge of a shaded verandah. Leaves measure 49 cm by 32 wide. It is growing in Albany.

It sounds like you have a pollination problem. This plant has male and female flowers and tends to produce male and female flowers at different times (to prevent self pollination – basically plant inbeeding). If the female flower is not pollinated, the immature fruit will just drop off before it grows. This article will help you learn more about pollinating the fruit and, therefore, getting a harvest: http://www.exoticrainforest.com/Natural%20and%20artificial%20pollination%20in%20aroids.html [1]
