Holes in yard, how can I tell the difference between a mole or chipmunk hole?

I'm not an expert, but have a friend that successfully used cut cloves of garlic to minimize the mole problem. Cut cloves into halves, then insert them into the holes/runs that moles create. Apparently, they can't stand the smell, so they vacate the area.
