Many different types of microorganisms live in soil, and each has different growth preferences. In general, higher temperatures, adequate water, and the availability of organic matter (such as from compost or crop residues) in the soil will encourage microorganism growth. Soil that is poor in organic matter, soil that is too dry, and cold soil will have slower microorganism growth. Chemicals such as fungicides and insecticides can also limit their growth.
