Meyer Lemon Trees

I have 2 Meyer Lemon trees that have fruit. One has only one lemon and its size of a regular lemon but its a light brown color. The other tree has 9 and they are all green. Trees were approx. 2 foot tall in when planted in spring of 2014. When do the lemons turn yellow and also some of the leaves have a black smutty substance on them. Can I treat them with dawn soap and water spray as we do with our knockout roses?

Hello,

Thank you for sending us your gardening question. There are several factors that affect the color and ripening time of lemons. Please see the attached article to review these reasons in detail. As for the “smutty substance,” it sounds like your trees may have a fungus and should be treated with a fungicide.
