Mexican Bird of Paradise

The ends of the stems of our Mexican Bird of Paradise plant are turning brown this year and it is not producing vibrant colored flowers as it has in past years. We did have a very hard freeze this past winter and we cut the plant down after that freeze as we do every year. The plant is in the direct Phoenix sun but has always produced wonderful flowering colors, until this year. What can cause the brown tips and what should we do to cure it?

You many want to increase watering to help reduce the stress.
While it is blooming a regular fertilizer can be applied.
When dormant cut the plant back by 1/3.
