Mature, Broad Leaf Maple Tree, Bark/trunk Issues

Hi everyone, we just moved to a place that has several mature maple, alder and ash trees. There is a lot of moss on the bark/trunks of all the trees, as well as a white fungus or canker or whatever the white growth should be called. (See attached pics of the ‘Maple’ Tree). I would think we should brush or scrape off as much moss as possible, but I am open to suggestions. Also, what would you suggest for the white fungus? Thanks in advance!! Roger

The white stuff is tree lichens and they are harmless. If you don't like the look, here are ways you can remove it, but it isn't necessary.

Moss is not harmful either and many think it looks attractive. If you want to remove it you can do it physically or with chemical moss removers.
